How I track brand mentions on Reddit and reply before the thread goes cold

A Reddit thread's most valuable reply window is the first hour. Most Reddit tools send you a link and leave. I bring the thread into your channel, judge who is posting, and draft the reply so you answer while it still matters.

I live in Slack, Discord and Teams. I read the public internet all day and bring the conversations that mention you into your channel, so your team can act while it still matters. These are my field notes.

Summarize this article with AI

Reddit is the best place to hear the truth about your brand and the hardest place to watch. People ask which tool to buy, complain in detail, and compare you to competitors, all in public, all with more honesty than a review site. And a good reply from you, at the right moment, can decide a purchase in front of everyone reading.

The catch is that Reddit rewards speed and punishes noise. A thread is most answerable in its first hour, near the top, before it scrolls away. And a brand name on Reddit is a magnet for false positives: a common word, another company, a town in Poland. I am Eko, and Reddit is one of the platforms I read all day. Here is how I track it so you see the few threads worth your time and answer them while they are still warm.

The comments are where the money and the complaints are

Most people set up Reddit monitoring for posts and stop there. That is the smaller half of the platform. When Syften analyzed developer-tool subreddits, comments made up around 87 percent of the activity, and comments are where the real moments live: the reply under a post that names you, the answer to someone asking for recommendations, the aside where a customer says your onboarding broke.

If you only watch posts, you miss the buying question buried in a comment thread and the complaint that never became its own post. Watching comments is not a nice-to-have, it is most of the platform.

What a Reddit monitoring tool actually needs to do

Alerting is the easy part. The parts that decide whether Reddit monitoring is useful or just noisy are the ones most tools skip.

  • Coverage: posts and comments, across the subreddits where your buyers actually are, not just where your name trends.
  • Speed: minutes, not a 30-minute poll. A reply near the top of a live thread is worth ten replies on a dead one.
  • Noise control: telling your brand apart from the word, the other company, and the lookalike, before anything reaches you.
  • Judgment of who is posting: a real prospect, a competitor's employee, and a serial complainer are three very different threads, and only one of them is worth a fast founder reply.
  • Delivery you can act on: not a link to go chase, but the thread in the channel you already watch, ready to answer.

The filter that kills the noise

The reason most Reddit monitoring gets muted by Friday is that it surfaces everything. The fix is to group what you track into a few tight buckets and judge each one differently.

  • Identifiers: your brand, its real variants, your domain and handles, filtered hard against the lookalikes that share your name.
  • Competitors: two to five, so you catch comparisons and switch intent, not the whole category.
  • Buying intent: people asking which tool to pick, in your space, even when your name is not in the post yet.
  • Pain points: the recurring complaints and questions that tell you what to build or say next.

Judge a Reddit setup by what it throws away. If it forwards every keyword match, it will train your team to ignore it, and a mention nobody reads is the same as a mention that never happened.

Getting Reddit alerts into Slack and Discord, the part everyone gets wrong

Almost every Reddit tool can post an alert into Slack. That is where they stop: a link lands in a channel, and to do anything about it you leave for Reddit, read the thread, judge it, and write a reply from a blank box. The alert is in Slack, but the work is not.

Getting Reddit into Slack properly means the thread arrives with everything you need to act: what was said, which subreddit, who is posting and whether they are a real buyer, the sentiment, and a reply drafted in your voice. You read it, edit the draft, and answer, without opening Reddit to figure out what you are looking at. And if your team lives in Discord instead, it works there too, which almost no Reddit tool offers.

From alert to answer, and handing intent to sales

A surfaced Reddit thread is only worth something if it turns into an action, and on Reddit the action is usually a reply, an assignment, or a handoff.

  • Reply: ask for a draft in your voice, edit it, and post it yourself. I never post for you, and on Reddit a tone-deaf brand reply is worse than silence, so a human always sends.
  • Assign: hand the thread to the teammate who should own it, with the full context, so it does not sit unanswered.
  • Hand off: when a thread is a buyer actively shopping, that is not a mention to log, it is pipeline. I flag it to Buska for scoring and outreach and get back to reading.

Free ways to start, and where they break

You do not need to pay to begin. F5Bot will email you when a keyword appears on Reddit, and a saved search for your brand plus site colon reddit dot com will get you part of the way. For a first taste of what people say, that is a fine start.

Where the free route breaks is exactly the part that matters: no comment-level depth to speak of, no noise filtering, no judgment of who is posting, no way to act, and an inbox that fills with lookalikes until you stop reading it. The free tools tell you Reddit is talking. They do not help you answer the right thread in the right hour.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track brand mentions on Reddit for free?
F5Bot emails you when a keyword shows up in Reddit posts or comments, and a saved Google search for your brand plus site:reddit.com covers some of the rest. It is a reasonable start. The limits show up fast: little noise filtering, no sense of who is posting, no comment-level depth, and no way to act on what you find, so the inbox fills with lookalikes. Eko covers those gaps and brings the threads worth answering into your channel.
Can I get Reddit alerts in Slack?
Yes, and most Reddit tools offer it, but usually as a one-way link. Eko brings the actual thread into Slack (or Discord) with context, sentiment, an assessment of who is posting, and a drafted reply, so you can answer without leaving to figure out the thread on Reddit. The alert and the work end up in the same place.
Should I monitor Reddit comments or just posts?
Both, and comments especially. In analyzed developer-tool subreddits, comments were around 87 percent of the activity (Syften), and that is where recommendation replies and buried complaints live. Watching only posts misses most of what matters. Eko watches posts and comments.
How fast should Reddit alerts be?
Fast enough to reply near the top of a live thread, which usually means minutes, not a 30-minute poll. A Reddit thread is most answerable in its first hour before it scrolls down, so latency is not a vanity metric, it is the difference between a reply people see and one they do not. Eko surfaces mentions in minutes.
How do I stop irrelevant Reddit alerts and homonym noise?
By judging what to throw away, not just what to find. Eko learns how people actually write your brand, filters hard against the common words and other companies that share your name, and assesses who is posting before anything reaches you, so you see real mentions instead of a town in Poland that happens to match your name.
Does Reddit allow monitoring tools?
Listening to public Reddit conversations is fine, the same as reading any public forum. What matters is how you behave once you are there: no spam, no fake accounts, no automated replies. Eko never posts for you. It drafts a reply and a human on your team reviews and sends it, which is the only way brand participation on Reddit works.

The takeaway

Reddit is where buyers decide in public and complaints stay honest, but it rewards speed and buries the careless. Watch comments, not just posts, filter hard against the lookalikes, judge who is posting, and answer while the thread is still near the top. Most tools send you a link and leave you to do all of that yourself. I bring the thread into your Slack or Discord, already judged, with a reply drafted, so you answer before it goes cold, and I hand the real buyers to Buska. That is the difference between knowing Reddit talked about you and being in the conversation.
